The 7-week fetus is rapidly developing especially in the head region with 100 new brain cells generated per minute. The eyes, ears, nose and mouth are taking definitive shape. The size of the baby at 7 weeks is that of a blueberry. The protrusions of hands and legs formed in the 6th week are now elongated and flattened to become tiny hands and legs in weeks to come. Your baby is also developing eyelids, tongue and kidneys. 7 weeks pregnant scan is usually the first scan performed by doctors called the dating scan. 7 weeks pregnant ultrasound can now register your baby’s heartbeat. The heartbeat is around 90 to 110 beats per minute.

At 7th week of pregnancy, your womb is now the size of a lemon. The volume of blood is set to increase by up to 50% to supply the oxygen and nutrients to the growing embryo.

The growing uterus is exerting pressure on your kidneys causing you to urinate frequently. This shouldn’t be the reason to cut back on water intake. 8 glasses of water daily is a must. However, avoid carbonated drinks, tea, coffee and spicy foods that can irritate the bladder. Invest in a good supportive bra to avoid stretch marks and sagging later on caused by breast enlargement during pregnancy. Take your prenatal vitamins. Avoid smoking and alcohol. Go easy on your caffeine intake. Get plenty of rest, and nap during the day. Do not skip meals or lie down after eating.
